John Aldred

John graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1971 with a degree in Zoology. After having returned from Peace Corps service in India, he settled in East Hampton, where he and his wife Gale raised two boys. For the past forty five years he has worked here largely on and around the water, life guarding at Hither Hills State Park, as a research assistant in the ichthyology department at the New York Ocean Science Lab in Montauk, a fisheries biologist at Multi Aquaculture Systems fish farm in Napeague, an environmental analyst with the town’s Natural Resources Department and for over twenty years as director of the East Hampton Town Shellfish Hatchery.

At the Shellfish Hatchery, while adhering to the rigorous local oversight provided by the Town Trustees, John fostered a cooperative working relationship with County, State and Federal agencies, non profit institutions and schools. This facilitated both attracting and participating in grant projects aimed at improving resource enhancement and restoration procedures, providing baymen opportunities to participate in shellfish culture as an additional means of remaining on the water and a variety of educational collaborations that were mutually beneficial to our program and participating students. This approach allowed and continues to allow the hatchery program to yield direct benefits in harvestable product for baymen and recreational harvesters, as well as indirect benefits in the water quality furnished by increased filter feeding shellfish.

John is very grateful for having been given the opportunity to develop the town’s shellfish hatchery program and earning the support of five successive town board administrations. Now, having the time to give Trustee matters the attention they deserve and a desire to contribute to a better environment for our children and grandchildren, he would like to give back to the community through service as a board member, where he believes that his experience and cooperative nature can be a helpful addition to the Trustees operations.

John is endorsed by the Democratic, Independence, and Working Families Parties
