Connie Cortese ED-19
Connie Cortese has not spent any of the summers in her life anywhere but Montauk, specifically in the Ditch Plains neighborhood. Her grandfather bought property there in 1940 and when Connie was a child, she would take one of her mother’s kitchen pots and fill it with blackberries that she’d pick from the shrub-populated land prior to it being developed. No one has more love in their heart for the majesty of Montauk and its natural beauty than Connie. Her large family on her grandfather’s side has also settled and operated local businesses in town: Giordano’s Lakeside Inn, which is now the Surf Lodge, was built and operated by her father and uncles. Her cousin was the town dentist for many years. Her aunt opened the Pizza Village. Another cousin opened and operated the Corner Store; another was the Superintendent of Montauk School. Montauk is in her blood and she has jealously protected it and fought for the
preservation of its natural environment her entire life. She’s volunteered her time for too many committees to list here, from the CAC, to the Montauk Playhouse Foundation. Connie is also an artist, mostly working in oil and wax and has exhibited her work throughout the East End. When not painting or volunteering or busy with her Democratic Committee work, she’s out on the waves of Ditch Plains beach, surfing. Jonathan Goldman ED-19
Jonathan Goldman began visiting Montauk 25 years ago while living in Chicago. After relocating to New York in 2000, he began spending more time here each summer and made Montauk his full-time home in 2020. He retired from Carnegie Hall’s development department in 2015. He has since consulted with various non-profits, focusing his work on planned giving. Growing up in New England, he watched his mother work tirelessly for decades as a member of the town Planning Board and Board of Selectmen. Her constant fight to preserve town wetlands while balancing the evolving needs of zoning codes and housing needs brought her much satisfaction. Her example and his love for the character and natural beauty of the East End drive his passionate belief that environmental preservation must be a priority in towns on the East End, and that residential and development codes must work in tandem as part of this strategic planning. Since 2024, he has been honored to serve on the East Hampton Town Democratic Committee. He is a regular supporter of CCOM, Montauk Historical Society, the lighthouse, Montauk film festival-it’s one and only year, the police and fire benevolent funds.Like most of us, he was drawn to the East End for its distinct environment and personality. He feels it is vital we keep it as beautiful as we found it. When not attending East End Dems meetings, you can find him on the tennis court in Montauk or at the ceramic studio in East Hampton.
